Freckles Romaine Lettuce is classic heirloom romaine with beautiful, tender, glossy, apple-green leaves splashed with maroon-red. Heat and sun tolerant, a long-standing variety that resembles Speckles Butterhead but with more substantial leaves that have a crisp, slightly bitter flavor.
Lettuce does well with beets, bush beans, pole beans, cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, onion, radish and strawberries in your garden or containers. You can also plant your lettuce at the base of young sunflowers for a little shade.
Germ: 2-10 days
Maturity: 55-70 days
Net Wt. per Packet: 250 mg
Approximate Seed Count: 200 Seeds/Packet
Planting and Care Directly sow into the garden as soon as soil can be worked in the spring. Cover lightly with soil, soak and keep moist until germination. Germination temperature: 60-70 deg. Row covers can be used to protect from late frosts. Sow again 2 weeks later. Avoid planting in late spring. Another crop may be started in the late summer for a fall harvest. Water regularly and fertilize when plants are 3″ (7.5 cm) tall.
Harvest Snap off individual outer leaves as needed. The center leaves form a loose head which can be harvested by cutting the entire plant at the base. Use before the plant starts to bolt to seed.
Your Health Lettuce is rich in potassium and other minerals, fiber and moderate amounts of vitamin A, C and K, and folic acid.
