This is an easy-to-grow, aromatic salad green, with slightly more peppery/nutty flavor than the cultivated variety and is rich in nutrients.  Native to the Mediterranean it was a popular salad plant in the Roman times. The deeply lobed leaves provide variety in salads and great flavor to sandwiches and as a garnish.  Use the leaves when young and small and re-seed often for continued harvest.  This is also a great candidate for container gardens and winter microgreens!  It can germinate at temperatures as low as  40 degrees F.

Description

Arugula is an easy-to-grow, aromatic salad green, with slightly more peppery/nutty flavor than the cultivated variety and is rich in nutrients.  Native to the Mediterranean it was a popular salad plant in the Roman times. Plant:  Sow directly into loose, fertile garden soil that has been improved with compost 3-4 weeks before last frost date.  Plant successively every 20-30 days until mid-summer.  During the warmer days of mid-summer plantings can be in partial or diffuse shade for the best flavor and tenderness.

Care:  Keep soil moist through germination, then water regularly.  Thin young seedlings to 6″ (15cm).

Harvest:  Pick individual leaves when 3-6″ long for best flavor or cut the entire plant before flowers form.

Health:  Arugula is a good source of Vitamins A, C and K, iron and calcium.
