Description
New classification for Shasta Daisy: Leucanthemum maximum
The sparkling large white flowers of Shasta Daisy are a familiar sight in gardens and meadows everywhere. Full flowers with white rays surround yellow centers on tall stems with dark green leaves. This vigorous species does well in bunches or as a border flower.
Grow in full sun. Direct sow seed into moderately rich soil in the late fall for early spring germination or in the spring after all danger of frost is past expect blooms the 2nd year. Starting seeds indoors 8 – 10 weeks before the last frost date and transplanting outside after all danger of frost is past may make it more possible to get blooms the first year. Germinate at temperatures of 70 – 75 deg F., then keep seedlings cooler at 65 deg F. for best growth. Only cover with a thin layer of soil as they need light to germinate and keep moist but not wet.
